Description

This Sweet Potato Turkey Meatloaf is a wholesome, flavorful twist on a classic comfort dish. It combines lean ground turkey with naturally sweet mashed baked sweet potato, seasoned with dried onion flakes, marjoram, and a tangy ketchup and Worcestershire sauce topping. Perfectly baked to a tender, juicy finish, this meatloaf is a nutritious and satisfying meal ideal for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Meatloaf Mixture

  • 1 medium baked sweet potato (about 7 ounces, approximately 1 heaping cup mashed)
  • 1 pound ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons dried onion flakes
  • 1 teaspoon marjoram
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup ketchup

Topping Sauce

  • 6 tablespoons ketchup (divided)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the meatloaf.
  2. Prepare the Sweet Potato: Remove the flesh from the baked sweet potato and discard the skin. Mash the sweet potato flesh in a large mixing bowl until smooth.
  3. Combine Meatloaf Ingredients: Add the ground turkey, egg, dried onion flakes, 1/4 cup ketchup, marjoram, and kosher salt to the mashed sweet potato. Using a fork, thoroughly mix all ingredients together until well combined but not overmixed to maintain a tender texture.
  4. Make the Topping Sauce: In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of ketchup with the Worcestershire sauce to create a flavorful glaze for the meatloaf.
  5. Shape and Apply Sauce: Form the turkey and sweet potato mixture into a loaf shape and place it on a baking sheet. Spoon the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce topping evenly over the meatloaf.
  6. Bake the Meatloaf: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 55 minutes, or until the meatloaf reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and is cooked through.
  7. Rest Before Serving: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. This resting period helps the juices redistribute, making it easier to slice and serving more moist.

Notes

  • If you don’t have leftover baked sweet potatoes, you can bake the potato in the oven or air fryer. However, the quickest method for baking the sweet potato is using the microwave.
  • To microwave a sweet potato, pierce it several times with a fork, wrap it in a paper towel, and microwave for 4 to 6 minutes, or until soft to the touch. Add more time if needed.
  • For Whole30 compliance, use sugar-free ketchup such as Primal Kitchen.
