Ingredients

Units Scale

Olive Salad:

  • 7 ounces small green olives, drained
  • 16 ounces giardiniera mix, roughly chopped
  • 3 ounces cocktail onions, roughly chopped
  • 2 ounces capers
  • 1/4 cup chopped banana peppers or pepperoncinis
  • 1/2 cup diced carrots
  • 1/2 cup diced celery
  • 12 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian Seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwich:

  • 1 loaf Italian bread, round
  • 1/2 pound deli sliced ham
  • 1/2 pound deli sliced salami
  • 1/2 pound sliced provolone cheese
  • 1/2 pound sliced Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Olive Salad: Drain the brined ingredients and chop the cocktail onions, giardiniera mix, and banana peppers. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Set aside.
  2. New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwich: Slice the bread in half horizontally. Hollow out the top half and drizzle olive salad juice on the bottom half. Layer ham, provolone, salami, and Swiss cheese. Top with olive salad and the bread top. Alternatively, fill the hollowed-out top with salad, place the bottom half over it, and flip. Cut and serve.

Notes

  • Opt for a giardiniera mix with red peppers and cauliflower.
  • Choose a dense, round Italian loaf for structural integrity.
  • The olive salad recipe yields extra, perfect for another sandwich or as a versatile condiment.
