Description

American Chop Suey, also known as Goulash, is a hearty, comforting one-pot meal featuring ground beef, elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato-based sauce infused with Italian seasonings and Worcestershire sauce. This classic American dish is topped with melted cheddar cheese and garnished with fresh parsley, making it a perfect family-friendly dinner ready in about 45 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 lbs (900g) ground beef (90/10)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

Liquids and Canned Items

  • 3 cups (730ml) beef broth
  • 29oz (820g) can tomato sauce
  • 28oz (790g) can diced tomatoes

Seasonings and Spices

  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 bay leaves

Pasta and Cheese

  • 2.5 cups (375g) uncooked elbow macaroni noodles
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Garnish

  • Parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Brown the Ground Beef: Heat olive oil in a dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring and breaking it apart, until no pink remains. Drain excess grease, then transfer the cooked beef to a bowl and set aside.
  2. Sauté Onions and Garlic: Return the dutch oven to the stove over medium heat. Add chopped onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become translucent, about 3 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook another 2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to let it burn.
  3. Add Liquids and Seasonings: Return the browned ground beef to the dutch oven along with beef broth, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and bay leaves. Stir everything together well and bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Simmer the Sauce: Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and let the sauce simmer gently for 10 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  5. Add Elbow Macaroni: Stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni noodles. Cover and continue to simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally, for another 10 minutes or until the noodles are al dente and have absorbed the flavors.
  6. Finish and Serve: Remove the pot from heat and discard the bay leaves. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese just before serving. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley. Serve hot and enjoy your classic American Chop Suey!
